CIRCA SERIES
ARTIST STATEMENT –
My family archive re-emerges as a gift every day. It is a place to travel a memory, reckon with grief, hold conversations with the past, reimagine the present, and contemplate futurity. The women captured in these relics lead me on a path of fascination, a consideration of the real and imagined lives of those whose living birthed my own.
"I acknowledge them as my route to a reconstruction of a world, to an exploration of an interior life that was not written, and to the revelation of a kind of truth,” wrote the American novelist Toni Morrison about her foremothers in 1995. This small body of work explores the interior of a moment past and asks what happens when we attempt to conjure a rememory after an encounter with the haptic repository that is the archive. Through the imagining of an interior landscape, we more deeply understand our fears and desires and ultimately hope that the richness of our interior world, too, is enough.
This work was created during my residency with the Delaware Contemporary Museum in Wilmington, Delaware. A departure from my previous collage works, this series sought an expanded visual language and narrative concerning my family archive and the women with whom I share blood.
